Did you know that apples have been around for thousands of years and come in over 7,500 different varieties? From crisp and tart Granny Smiths to sweet and juicy Honeycrisps, apples are a delicious and nutritious fruit that can be enjoyed in so many ways!
This month, we’re diving into the wonderful world of apples—learning, tasting, and cooking up some apple-licious fun!
Apple Fun Facts
Apples float because they are 25% air! That’s why bobbing for apples is such a fun game.
The saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" comes from apples being rich in fiber and antioxidants.
The largest apple ever recorded weighed 4 pounds, 1 ounce!
Apple trees take 4 to 5 years to produce their first fruit but can grow apples for up to 100 years!
Let’s Get Cooking!
Sautéed Apples
A warm and sweet treat perfect as a snack or topping!
Ingredients:
2 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tbsp butter (or coconut oil)
1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp lemon juice (optional)
A pinch of salt
Instructions:
Melt butter in a pan over medium heat.
Add apple slices and stir to coat.
Drizzle with honey/maple syrup, sprinkle with cinnamon, and add salt.
Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized.
Serve warm!
Baked Apples
Like apple pie without the crust!
Ingredients:
4 apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji)
2 tbsp butter (or coconut oil)
¼ cup brown sugar or maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ cup chopped nuts (optional)
¼ cup raisins (optional)
½ cup water or apple juice
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Core apples, leaving the bottom intact.
Mix butter, sugar, cinnamon, nuts, and raisins.
Stuff mixture into apples.
Place apples in a baking dish and add water/juice.
Bake for 30-40 minutes until soft. Enjoy warm!
Homemade Applesauce
Fresh, naturally sweet, and easy to make!
Ingredients:
4 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
½ cup water
½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
Instructions:
Add apples and water to a saucepan over medium heat.
Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Mash for chunky sauce or blend for smooth sauce.
Stir in cinnamon and vanilla if desired.
Let cool and enjoy warm or chilled!
